What We Do > Mission and Goals:
The Greater Mankato Diversity Council's (GMDC) mission is to build a community where the attitudes and actions of its people foster mutual respect so that all can fully participate.
  • To expand diversity education programs for youth and adults, minority and majority.
  • To build capacity in the community to proactively address issues of diversity and discrimination
    by celebrating differences.
  • To build capacity in the community to eliminate racism and all forms of discrimination.
  • To build community awareness and support for diversity among individuals, businesses
    and organizations.

By accomplishing these goals, the GMDC will:

  • Stimulate changing attitudes and behaviors of tomorrow’s leaders – our children.
  • Nurture a brighter future for everyone – so students have a bright and promising future.
  • Partner with businesses, government and non-profit organizations to remove barriers to participation and tap into the benefits of diversity.
  • Build an inclusive and welcoming community one person and relationship at a time.

 

Work Plan and Priorities:

Goal One: To expand diversity education programs for youth and adults, minority and majority.

  • Prejudice Reduction Workshops (grades 5 through 10)
  • Recruit and train local facilitators
  • Board of Director training
  • Expand video and book lending library

Goal Two: To build capacity in the community to proactively address issues of diversity and discrimination by celebrating differences.

  • Support new and existing cultural activities
  • Sponsor an annual recognition event on Monday, September 24, 2007

Goal Three: To build capacity in the community to eliminate racism and all forms of discrimination.

  • Incorporate the GMDC as an independent non-profit organization
  • Provide local diversity leadership training
  • Develop and distribute educational materials
  • Catalogue diversity resources within the community

Goal Four: To build community awareness and support for diversity among individuals, businesses
and organizations.

  • Encourage Diversity Council’s participation in community activities
  • Website enhancements
  • Media relations
  • GMDC presentations at area civic groups
  • Annual report
